Effect of polyacrylamide friction reducer on calcite dissolution rate at 25 °C and implication for hydraulic fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing is widely used to create cracks and increase the size connectivity of existing fractures, leading higher permeability shale rocks production unconventional hydrocarbon sources. The main chemicals in hydraulic fluids can initiate fractures reservoirs by acid induced carbonate dissolution, minimise energy loss during pumping process friction reducer enhanced fluid viscosity. Here, using batch reactor experiments we investigate effect non-ionic polyacrylamide polymer (friction reducer) on dissolution rate calcite acidic solutions (0.2 M buffer solution sodium acetate/acetic acid) at 25 °C. results demonstrate that (from 0 30 mg) slows down a factor 4. Hydrogen bonding surface complexation between potentially trigger an adsorption mechanism protects from dissolving. This research provides new insights into (polyacrylamide) influenced pore generation, enabling engineers optimise design (amount polyacrylamide) consider suitable actions prevent having negative impact productivity.
